Church-State Relations Research

IPSEC develops research on the dynamics of Church-State relations in where the Orthodox Church as both a majority and a minority status.

In their histories, the Eastern Churches conducted their relations with the State in a variety of ways, depending on the State’s attitude towards the Church. These attitudes involved relations of submissiveness, complete separation, cooperation, or competition for power and influence. The extent to which the Church joined the State in safeguarding Christianity, particularly in the wake of forced conversion, national identity, population exchange, etc., raises questions that can only be answered by looking into situations that display the Church-State protocol. Instances when church leaders, through their public presence, endorsed State’s belligerent actions are key indicators.

The research agenda includes data collection on:

public attitudes,
church-state legislation,
public protocol,
international relations,
nationalist agendas,
religious freedom, etc.,

The findings of this research will be published in the IPSEC Journal as well as in the Book Series. Datasets will be available for download and analysis by social scientists.
